01My story

Special Forces. AI Security. No Filter.

My career started in the U.S. Army and led to over a decade in Special Forces as a Cyber Electronic Warfare Warrant Officer. That’s not a resume line, that’s where I learned to think under pressure, operate in ambiguity, and lead through the kind of threats that don’t come with a playbook.

Now I run Outpost Gray, an AI security consulting firm, and I spend my days helping organizations understand the threats they haven’t fully woken up to yet: Shadow AI, LLM vulnerabilities, agentic AI acting as insider threats, and deepfakes sophisticated enough to fool your finance team.

I’ve spoken at RSA 2024. I write on Medium. I co-host the 2CyberChicks podcast. And I built an AI agent named Zara, because if you’re going to talk about AI, you should probably build with it too.

The throughline in everything I do: make the complex real, make the dangerous understandable, and make sure the humans in the room actually know what to do about it.

06Women in AI

Why representation in AI matters — and what I’m doing about it.

We are at a historical inflection point. Artificial intelligence is reshaping every industry, every government, every military operation on the planet. And the people building it, governing it, and deciding how it’s used are still overwhelmingly not women.

That’s not a diversity talking point. It’s a security and strategic risk. When the people designing AI systems all think the same way, share the same blind spots, and come from the same backgrounds, you don’t get better AI. You get brittle AI. You get AI that fails the people it never had in the room when it was built.

I came to AI through a path most people haven’t walked: Special Forces intelligence, 19 years in cybersecurity, a decade of operating in environments where getting it wrong has real-world consequences. That background gives me a perspective boardrooms, labs and conference stages need more of — not despite my being a woman, but partly because of it.

Through Outpost Gray and theZaraAI.com, I’m working to change the ratio. I teach AI to people who think AI isn’t for them. I show women in cybersecurity how to build AI agents, automate their workflows, and position themselves at the front of the AI wave — not the back of it.

I’m not ahead of you, waiting to pull the ladder up. I’m here to hand it down.
